Huey + Natalie // A Love Story Seven Years in The Making

It is kind of hard to believe that I am finally writing this post. Well over a year ago, I spoke with Natalie about filming her wedding and I was beyond excited to have the opportunity, but that was before I actually got the chance to meet her & see what kind of sweet & incredibly caring person she is. While attending the WPPI show in Vegas, I was about to go into a class, and two girls came up to me and one said, “oh my gosh Josh, you are filming my wedding in a few months. What are you doing here?!”. The two girls turned out to be Natalie & Serena, and over the course of our week in Vegas, we all became such amazing friends. I mean I just don’t let anyone force me into seeing Magic Mike, even if I luckily fell asleep a quarter through it. After Vegas, I was really excited to meet the man that Natalie had told us all so much about. In Natalie’s words, “It all started almost seven years ago, when I met this sweet boy named Hugh at the St. Johns College Boathouse at my first day of practice at the Annapolis Rowing Club in our sophomore year of high school. We joined the team by chance – a very spur of the moment choice that turned out to be one of the best decisions we’ve ever made. Our first “dates” were spent running laps around the football field, rowing in the Severn River, and traveling to regattas on the weekends. I remember those days so clearly – sun speckled and filled with long afternoons on the Chesapeake, where we became close friends and learned so much about one another. We were barely over fifteen, only teenagers, but inseparable from the moment that we met. The first days of dating turned into months of growing up together, and falling even more in love. Somewhere along the way – those months became a year, then two years and before I knew it, we were in college, getting ready to go into our senior year, talking about the future, and dreaming of this very moment.”

After a crazy drive up to Pasadena, MD, we arrived at Natalie & Huey’s beautiful home on the bay for their rehearsal dinner. Natalie had invited myself and an “assistant”, Papa Gooden, to check out the property and to partake in a crab feast. As we watching the rehearsal of the ceremony and ate a ton of crab (my first time by the way..amazing), I watched Huey & Natalie as they laughed, cried, and spoke softly to one another. It was incredibly evident how in love they were and how well they connected with one another. I sometimes forget that a wedding is more than just a couple uniting, but two families as well. It was neat to meet both sides of their family and to hear a few toasts from each. We even got a few hilarious lessons in crab eating by Natalie’s uncle. After a wonderful night, we returned in the morning for the big day. The ceremony was held in an amazing garden in the front of the house and the reception took place in a beautiful Sperry tent by the bay. It was just breathtakingly beautiful and I’m pretty sure Katelyn, Paul (my awesome second shooter), & I were completely overwhelmed with possibilities for beautiful images. Natalie is an incredibly talented writer & photographer (seriously..go read her blog), and I am so glad she decided to write a letter to read for Huey during the ceremony. It was neat to have the process of writing, proofreading, and then the actual ceremony letter reading be shown in the film. There was so much thought and beauty within it & I felt like it really resonated with their relationship. Dan of Premier DJ Services started up the party during the reception & it did not stop. I’m pretty sure I even danced at some point, along with her amazing vendors, guests, family, and friends. I had an amazing time really getting to know Natalie & Huey, and I am so excited to finally share their film with you below:

Marie + James // Engaged | Harrisonburg, Virginia

A few weeks ago, I was able to photograph my amazing friends Marie & James outside of Harrisonburg, Virginia. I have known Marie ever since high school when we were both enrolled in photojournalism classes & it was so great to catch up & see that she found the love of her life in James. We started our session off by meeting at Eastern Mennonite University’s planetarium & observatory, where Marie & James shared their first kiss. It was a gorgeous spot that overlooked Harrisonburg & the Shenandoah Valley. Unfortunately I have determined that Virginia has the most unpredictable weather as we experienced clouds, rain, beautiful sun, thunderstorms, and then amazing light again in about an hour and a half. After we explored & survived the weather at the observatory, we drove down to the corner of Franklin St. and Mason St in downtown Harrisonburg, where they both lived. They dressed up into more of a formal look, which I personally think was killer (gotta love the hat & dress). The neighborhood was so nice and it reminded me a little of Charleston with the beautifully decorated porches. After we took over the street & were chased by neighbor kids giggling about all the kissing, we drove out on 33 West in search of a field. With the meter barely at 1/30th and 1/15, we found an amazing spot and shot until the sun dipped behind the mountains. I am so excited to be capturing Marie & James on their big day this September and I am thrilled to share their engagement session with you below. Enjoy!

P.S – This entire blog post is on medium format film with my new Contax 645. So thrilled with this combination. :] Scans by Photovision in Oregon.

Meredith + Darrell // Wedding | Richmond, Virginia

2013 has already been filled with so many amazing stories and the one I am about to share is one of my favorites. Darrell and Meredith live in Atlanta, but celebrated their wedding day in Richmond, Virginia. Their love for one another was so evident in their vows, first look, and every other interaction on their wedding day.  The tears showed up before Darrell even took his first glance at his bride & he could barely get through reading a handwritten letter Meredith had sent over to him in the morning. The first look was just magical and it was incredible to see every worry or fear disappear as they saw each other for the first time. The heartfelt ceremony was held at St. John’s United Church of Christ & the reception was held at The Jefferson Hotel in downtown Richmond. The reception was just incredible with a grand entrance into cocktail hour and a lot of amazing dancing thanks to the band Another Level. We also loved working alongside the fabulous Katelyn & Michael of Katelyn James Photography. I am so thrilled to finally share Meredith & Darrell’s film with you below:

Kitan + Jaylan // Wedding Film

A few weeks ago I shared Kitan & Jaylan’s wedding images with you and today I am thrilled to finally share their film. We had the awesome opportunity to do both photo & cinema at their wedding and it was neat to play more of the role of a director’s role while part of our team was shooting stills & the other video. You can read more about their wedding here. I hope you enjoy the film below! :]

Kitan + Jaylan // Wedding | College Park, MD

2013 is going to be a year of some really exciting changes for us, and I am so thrilled to have started our wedding season off with Kitan & Jaylan. They are such a fun and an amazing couple with a love that extends to everyone around them. The wedding & reception took place at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church on an absolutely gorgeous day in College Park, Maryland. Kitan & Jaylan kept their wedding to close friends and family, which really gave it more of intimate feeling. Before the first look, they read separate letters from each other, which really gives you a beautiful glimpse into their lives and the love they share. Since Kitan is in the Navy, one of the most unique aspects of the day was the saber arch after the ceremony. On command, the saber team raises their sabers into a high arch, and as Kitan & Jaylan passed through, the last two saber bearers lower the sabers in front of them until they kissed. Before releasing Kitan & Jaylan, the saber bearer gives Jaylan a gentle swat on her backside with his saber, announcing “Welcome to the Navy Ma’am!”. It was a really neat tradition & certainly something we have not seen before. Once Kitan & Jaylan entered the reception, we also experienced our first Korean Paebaek, where Kitan & Jaylan’s parents & honorees were seated in front of a table laden with various edibles and tea to offer blessings. It was a really colorful and fun tradition, especially the piggy back ride at the end. The Potomac Jazz Band got the party started & it went on into the night. I want to thank my awesome team  of Jen, Jordan, and Greg for all of their help throughout the day & I hope you enjoy the images below! :]
