Kara & Tim are such an amazing couple, and we were thrilled to capture their wedding day in late April. I have always loved Lexington, and was excited to finally get to make a film in the heart of it. The city and surrounding areas are absolutely gorgeous, which provided a great backdrop throughout the entire day. The ceremony took place at the Lexington Presbyterian Church and the beautiful reception was held inside a Sperry Tent at the Hampton Inn Col Alto. Luckily, the sun cleared up before the reception, and guests were able to venture around the lawn during cocktail hour. After three weekends of rain, it was a gorgeous sight to see! Mo Sol, an amazing band that drove up from Atlanta, got the party started and it did not stop. We had an amazing time working with Kara and Tim, and I am thrilled to share their film with you below!

I am so excited to finally share our first wedding film of 2012! It has certainly been quite awhile since I posted our last film, but its great to be shooting & editing again. When I first spoke to Silvana last year, I knew her wedding would be the perfect fit for us. She told me a little bit about how she met Doncoleon, their son, and her love of anything vintage (she designed a lot of the accessories featured in the wedding). The ceremony and reception were both held at the Historic Mankin Mansion in Richmond, Virginia. The grounds were beautiful, and we had no shortages of awesome places to shoot. The guys were housed in a game room, complete with a pool table, foosball, and a popcorn machine. It was definitely awesome! Unfortunately, the weather was not on our side, but Silvana & Doncoleon embraced it. I loved their heartfelt ceremony, but the reception was amazing. The band, toasts, and special Michael Jackson experience were hilarious. We had such a great time getting to know Silvana & Doncoleon, and I hope you enjoy their film below!

A few months ago, Kait and I had a serious talk about personal projects, and what we really wanted to shoot. We both fell in love with the thought of doing street photography, and started to really research and discover the genre together. Street photography to me is really about capturing the emotion and expressions of people. The thought of taking candid shots of complete strangers is extremely intimidating to me, even though I do this all the time at weddings, its expected in that type of environment. Since we both live in pretty unpopulated areas, we decided to head to New York City over Kait’s spring break to give it a shot. Originally, I was going to second shoot for Kait on a wedding, but that fell through and we were left with four whole days to explore the city and experiment. The experience was amazing, and while we were very shy at first, we got closer and closer to our subjects, until we got the images we were looking for (still not close enough). Each day presented a new challenge and we generally stuck to the rule of shooting with a 35mm lens and getting as close as possible. With street photography, it is almost impossible to focus on the fly with a rangefinder, so I generally left it at F/8, which allows anything from 3ft to infinity to be in focus. I really wanted to challenge myself and just shoot with my Leica M9 and M6. I could just throw them both in my ShootSac, and I would be set for the whole day. Kait rocked her D700, and scored some amazing shots! You can see those here. Overall, I am excited about what came out of the experience. We photographed some pretty interesting characters, and its encouraged us to try to seek them out in our own cities. Later this year, Kait and I are heading to Paris & London for two weeks, and I know we will definitely be bringing home quite a few images to share. I hope you enjoy my perspective on New York City below!

A few days ago, I found myself wandering into the Apple Store to “just look”. Of course, I came out with something, but this time I feel like I purchased something revolutionary. In the last two years, streaming video has become a huge part of our lives. From on demand content to Netflix, most users are using streaming services rather than discs. While I could do this through my cable box, TV, Blu Ray player, and Xbox 360, it was never easy to stream personal content over to my TV from my computer. The Apple TV solves that and it is a steal at 100 dollars. You can easily bring over your music, photos, and video through home share in iTunes or stream videos from your Vimeo or Youtube accounts.

So why does this matter?

Currently we deliver our films on DVDs, which are only standard definition. It still looks good, but does not have the same level of clarity as HD has. The only upside is that almost everyone has a player. To make it HD, we would to burn blu-ray discs (few people have players) or deliver the film online via FTP or through Vimeo. In the end, we want our clients to have a product that is of the best quality, and is future proof. To us the HD file is the clear winner, but there has not been an easy way to get that to your TV. With Apple TV, we finally have an inexpensive solution to really bring your wedding film to your television in the way it was meant to be seen. When I first pulled Vimeo up and started watching my films on a 60-inch TV with surround sound, I was absolutely blown away. It is a completely different experience, and the quality is outstanding. I definitely spent a few hours watching my films in awe of how much better they looked. Therefore, for our 2012 and 2013 clients, we want to make this experience available to you. For 2012, we are going to offer the finished HD film as a downloadable file for free. For potential 2013 clients, we are going to give you the choice of DVDS or the downloadable file. If you choose the downloadable file only, you will receive 150 dollars off the package price. We strongly believe that disc based players will start to disappear over the next few years, and we want to give our clients a file that is archivable and in the best quality. If you do choose to go the Apple TV route, once you download your film, all you need to do is drop it in iTunes and you will be all set to view it.

I am absolutely thrilled to share our first 2012 wedding on the blog! Last November I met up with Desiree and Donnie at Breaux Vineyards for their engagement session, and almost in the blink of an eye I found myself in Washington D.C last week for their wedding. Desiree and Donnie were so much fun to work with during their e-session, and their wedding was no different. The stunning St. Regis Hotel served as their ceremony and reception backdrop, while Cherry Blossom Events & florist Holly Chapple perfected it. One of my favorite aspects about this wedding is that there were so many little touches of family in the details. From the wine ceremony to the military pins on the bouquet, it really created a wonderful sense of who Donnie & Desiree are. I hope you enjoy a small look at Desiree & Donnie’s D.C wedding below!!

In April of 2011 we had the wonderful opportunity to film Cristina & Adam’s wedding in Charlottesville, Virginia. Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate and we were only able to spend a few minutes with Cristina and Adam outside. A few months ago Cristina got back in touch with me, and we started planning their anniversary photo session in D.C. We both agreed that we would only shoot it the weather was perfect, and it certainly was. The Cherry Blossom Festival was in full swing, and everything looked absolutely amazing. After dodging countless tourists, we came away with some great images, and I’ve been ecstatic to share them all. Enjoy! :]

I met Allen a few years ago when he taught at a local photography workshop. He really left an impression on me through his work and incredible storytelling. Allen has been a photojournalist in Harrisonburg for the past fifty years, and has touched many people with his images and dedication. Through all the projects I have shot in the last few years, I had always wanted to make a small film about Allen’s life. The opportunity finally arose this year when my girlfriend, Kait, suggested that we work on a creative project together before the busy wedding season started. My good friend Christa Gitchell helped us convince Allen to participate, and loaned us her awesome darkroom space for the interview. While the focus is on Allen’s work in the sixties, we hope you get a good sense of who he is as an artist, and why his work truly stands out from the rest. We hope you enjoy the film below! :]

After the ceremony, Carpe Donuts provided fresh donuts and hot chocolate for guests. The donuts were delicious and the perfect post-ceremony treat. Afterwards we headed to the Corcoran Gallery of Art for the reception. It was absolutely beautiful and it was so neat to see Chris & Jen’s ideas come together for the space. The band, Gonzo’s Nose, got the dance party off to a great start. Chris and Jen were so much fun to work with, and I hope you enjoy their film below!

Back in October, Meagan and Donnie invited us to film their beautiful wedding in Charleston, South Carolina. Charleston is one of my absolute favorite places, and having been once before I knew it would be amazing. Meagan is also a videographer, so she really understood our process and allowed us creative freedom in almost every aspect. She also follows a lot of our work, so we offered to shoot some Super 8 B&W reversal film in exchange for being awesome. Once we arrived, we met up with Kellan Studios for lunch (they are seriously amazing photographers + also from VA ;]), and we headed to the Isle of Palms to follow Meagan and Donnie as they got ready. Afterwards we headed to Boone Hall Plantation for the first look, which was a cinematographers dream. The three mile drive is lined with majestic live oak trees embellished with cascading Spanish moss. It was absolutely stunning, and probably one of my favorite locations ever. The ceremony and reception were held nearby at the Cotton Dock, which overlooks a small marsh. The texture was off the hook and Meagan really made the space her own. 1500 hand folded Origami peace cranes hung infront of the reception area, as well as over the dance floor. They looked incredible and we were sure to include a few in the footage. After the heartfelt ceremony, Meagan and Donnie danced into the night. At one point Donnie and all of the guests broke out into a surprise choreographed dance for Meagan that was incredible. No one was quite sure when it would happen, but it was truly perfect. Before their sparkler exit, some guests launched lanterns into the night. The sight was amazing and really was a highlight of the reception. Meagan and Donnie were such a thrill to work with and I am so excited to share their film below!!! Enjoy!!

As I prepare to finish the last few films of 2011, I can only think about the thirty-two amazing couples we have had the privilege to get to know over this past year. In January, I wrote about our process, and how the story plays the largest role in our films. The stories this year have been incredible and we were blown away by how many couples let us into their lives, and not just provide “coverage” of their wedding day. We are so blessed to be able to do what we love, and today I wanted to share some advice for any aspiring photographers or cinematographers looking to get into this field.

1) You have to go through a large body of work, before you will find your style.

Unfortunately, I learned this the hard way this year, but it is the truth. Do a huge volume of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week or every month, you are going to finish one project. As Chase Jarvis preaches, “Create, Share, and Sustain.” It is only by going through a large volume of work that you are going to catch up and close that gap. So that the work you are making is as good as your ambitions. You are going to fail, a lot, and that is what will shape your style. You just have to go out there and start shooting. It has taken me over 60 weddings to make me realize what I really wanted to make, and I am still experimenting (might be an endless journey).

2) Your time is valuable.

I cannot stress this enough. Put an hourly limit on what your doing and charge accordingly. I used to give unlimited time at weddings, and no one respected me at all. We would get to the event super early, nothing would be ready to shoot yet, and then we would leave late. Now, I have limits on my packages, and things move on time or it is not captured. You have to be firm on this, or you will end up suffering when you have a few extra hours to edit later on.

3) Personal work defines everything else.

Unfortunately, my schedule this year left me almost no time for my self. I took on way too much work and its strained on my creativity this year. The magical thing that separates us is our personal work. I would go as far as to say that personal work should always come first and should inspire your paid work. It is your chance to experiment without worry. In most cases, personal work has led to me other jobs, and it typically gets more attention than paid work.

4) Respect others…aka the photographer vs. videographer.

We have worked with brilliant photographers, and we have worked with “oh god a videographer” photographers. No matter what, we treat those professionals the same and with respect. While styles vary, I always try to respect another professional’s work, as long as they do the same for me. In some cases, people have given us no respect, and while we are very angry with those individuals, we remained professional. I suggest you research the vendors you will be working with before the event and send them an email explaining what you do and how you do it. After all, we are both there to capture the bride and groom’s wedding day and make it the best it can be.

5) Network and educate.

Networking is essential in any industry, and its gotten us in more amazing situations than we could have dreamed of. Who knew I would be shooting a wedding in NYC for Stillmotion or helping them out on their amazing Showtime documentary if I did not attend their workshop last November. A simple introduction can get you far, and in our case many referrals from photographer friends. You just have to put yourself out there and you will not only make great friends, but you will learn a lot from them too.
